my style...

In today’s life, everyone has their own sense of style.

From boho chic, to romantic to artistic and of course the plain Jane.

Style is a personal perception which is developed from a very early stage in life. Some research can see a trend in style from as early as 2 years old. Some styles are borrowed from time or even copied from a friend and then some are completely abstract and new. Fashion sense among university students are also dependant on the field they are studying.

For instance,

Engineers- the style is very casual and very easy to wear.

Architects- dress very trendy, to the point and on the go.

Artists and designer- styles vary from super stylish and glamorous to amazingly artistic and innovative.

Accountant– is usually plain and tailored.

IT- These students range from Goth to extremely casual to super stylish.

Medical students- Easy to wear, comfy and chic.

Teachers- Matching and grown up-like.

Psychologists- Fitted and some even high fashion with very neutral tones.

Journalists or writers- Romantic, Antique-like and  early decade inspired.

Sports Management students- Shorts, flops and T-shirts.

burrrrrr, buzzzzst, burrrr, buzzzzzst........

Smartphones makes you dom stupid dumb

Sharing a classroom desk with 6 other design students and trying to concentrate may sometimes mean you just end up scribbling on your notes or writing letters or just plain bbm-ing.

Research show that the average student’s grades have dropped with a staggering 20% on average once introduced to a smartphone.

One may argue that some students are more prone to use a phone during a lecture to keep busy/ procrastinate - or as someone said “to keep my social life up to date”

REALLY???!!!! Are you serious??????!!!!!

Then the next argument occurred. Why do you “NEED” your smartphone to keep your social life up to date? Since when is it acceptable to rather type a conversation than talking to the person themselves?

Further research shows that the modern student is much shyer than the average student in 1980’s. They seem to think in very typing terms (abstractly) rather than logical terms.

A poll done on first year design students said that:

0% put their phones off when driving
5% put their phones off during lectures
64% are texting whilst driving
94% are texting during a movie or a conversation
98% said that the first thing to do in morning it to check your phone for updates
70% Eat with their phone next to them
90% said they can’t live without a phone
76% said they feel insecure when their phone is switched off

On a lighter note here are some fun facts about smart phones:

So…… if you are in a lecture or simply just chatting to someone- don’t be rude and answer the bbm or sms right away unless it is like life threatening or something rather important.
Just for curiosity- click on the link at the bottom and find out how addicted you are to your phone…

Oh and another thing- be smarter than your smart phone and keep up your grades!

Just take the quiz on the link below, I now you are sooooo curious to find out, to see how addicted you are to your smartphone...http://www.noanxiety.com/tests/cell-phone-addiction-test.html

My weekend crisis!!

I have never realised that, I as a design student, are fully dependant on technology! At the end of last year I bought a new Notebook, installed all the basics, anti Virus and all, and was soooooo damn proud of my new Notebook! I love working on it! Until this weekend- Saturday (09:15AM) to be exact!

You see what happened was that I work on it everyday, and as it was Friday, I got some info from a lecturer, save it on a USB. A friend wanted a Presentation so I used the same USB and copied the presentation and gave the USB to her- and so she passed it on to 2 of my other friends. I got it back and got more info from another lecturer. (And it was Friday afternoon- I'm seriously not gonna do homework on Friday that's for sure!) So as Saturday morning came up- and I finally wanted to start working my whole computer froze! I lost EVERYTHING on the USB and most of the files on my laptop! JUST MY LUCK!

And that made me think. How many of us actually do take precautions for when you do end up formatting everything?

I asked some of my friends how many times a week they actually scan their computers and the results were:
46% said: "The computer scans itself- so I never scan it"
7% said: "Once a week"
15% said: "Twice a week"
7% said:"Everyday"
24% said: "I don't have an anti-virus at the moment"

So I went and did some research on how to keep your notebook safe, or relatively safe.

I know some of these tips are really common sense- but just read it anyway:

1. Get a SUPER anti-Virus
2. Don't open weird, or unknown emails
3. Avoid downloading programs from unfamiliar sites
4. Don't keep valuable info(mostly work) on your laptop
5. Make sure you firewall is turned on
6. And ALWAYS make back-ups

Take a tip from me- don't assume a USB is stable- especially when it comes to projects and work.
Rather make a back-up and do not regret it when like me, you get stuck on a Saturday and can't work!
